Pink bollworm is a difficult pest for one specific reason: the damage happens where you cannot see it.
The larva enters a developing boll and feeds inside. From the outside the boll looks intact. By the time the crop is visibly affected, the losses are already fixed and there is little to be done.
Early detection is not a refinement here. It is the whole strategy.
Why this became a serious problem again
Bt cotton provided effective control for years. Pink bollworm populations in several Indian cotton-growing regions have since developed resistance, and the protection is no longer dependable.
That change matters practically. A farmer who relied on the seed technology and stopped scouting is now exposed. Monitoring has to come back into the routine.
The four things to look for
Rosette flowers. A flower with twisted, unopened petals rather than a normal bloom. Larval feeding inside causes the distortion. This is often the earliest field-visible sign and it is easy to walk past if you are not specifically looking.
Entry holes on bolls. Small and easily missed, sometimes plugged with frass, often near the base of the boll. They close over as the boll grows, which makes later detection harder.
Interlocked or stained lint. Cut open suspect bolls. Damaged lint appears matted, discoloured, or bound together. Seeds may be hollowed.
Premature boll opening. Bolls that open early or unevenly frequently indicate internal damage.
Set traps, and read them
Pheromone traps are the most reliable early-warning tool available. They attract adult males and give you a running count of pest pressure before crop damage appears.
Two things matter for them to be useful.
Consistency. Count on the same schedule and write the numbers down. A single reading tells you almost nothing. A rising trend across weeks tells you a great deal.
Lure replacement. Pheromone lures degrade. An expired lure produces low catch counts that look reassuring and are meaningless.
Combine trap counts with physical boll inspection across several points in the field. Traps tell you the pest is present; boll cutting tells you whether it is actually causing damage.
Managing it
Effective control is layered, not a single spray.
Destroy residue promptly after harvest. This is among the highest-impact actions available. Larvae survive in leftover bolls and stalks and emerge to infest the next crop. Removing that bridge between seasons breaks the cycle. Uprooting and destroying stubble matters more than most farmers assume.
Avoid extended and staggered sowing. Where cotton is sown across a long window in one area, the pest gains a continuous food supply. Community-level coordination on sowing dates is genuinely effective and genuinely difficult to organise.
Do not extend the crop beyond its normal duration. Late-season cotton left standing gives pink bollworm populations time to build for next year.
Use pheromone-based mating disruption where available. Saturating the field with pheromone prevents males locating females, cutting reproduction without insecticide.
Treat only on threshold, not on schedule. Calendar spraying wastes money and accelerates resistance. Spray when monitoring says pressure justifies it. Rotate chemical classes. Consult your state agricultural university or KVK for current recommendations, since approved products and resistance patterns change.
The coordination problem
Pink bollworm does not respect field boundaries. If your neighbours leave residue standing or sow across a wide window, your careful management is undermined by pest pressure arriving from next door.
This is a genuine limitation of individual action. The regions that have controlled pink bollworm most successfully have done so through village or block-level coordination on sowing windows and residue destruction — not through any individual farmer's spray programme.
If there is a farmer producer organisation or a cooperative in your area, this is worth raising there.
